The courtroom was vast, and the silence oppressive. Michael, seated in the witness box, felt the blood drain from his face. He watched the defendant, the man who had stolen his software code, give his testimony. The other man looked at him with a look of pure contempt.

His leg bounced uncontrollably, a nervous tic he couldn’t suppress. He wanted to shout, to scream about the years of work that had gone into the program.

Each word he spoke felt like a struggle, a fight against the rising tide of fury and helplessness. He closed his eyes, his breathing shallow and rapid.
